A story about how insightful questions can turn everyday working experience into a source of self-coaching

I’m pleased to see my article, The Questions That Help Managers Coach Themselves, published in EMEX Magazine.
I wrote it because I’ve been thinking about how much managers can learn from the experiences they’re already having at work, particularly when there isn’t time for formal coaching or training.
The story follows Shane, a manager who is good at solving problems but discovers that managing people asks something different of him.
After a difficult conversation with a member of his team, one question changes how he looks at what happened:
What else could it mean?
That question leads him to examine his assumptions, his reactions and what he might have missed. In doing so, he begins to coach himself.
For me, that’s the interesting part of self-coaching. Our everyday experiences can contain more learning than we initially recognise. Sometimes we just need to look again and ask a different question.
Thank you to Esther and Dyan for giving my article a place in EMEX Magazine.
