Today, a new Story Lesson: How Asking What Makes You Happy Transforms Professional Decisions When Answers Conflict.

Each Story Lesson explores a real WorkLife moment where something important becomes visible — a conversation shifts, an assumption is challenged, or a different way of thinking begins to emerge. From that moment, the lesson unfolds into a structured learning experience that helps you understand what happened, why it mattered, and how to apply the insight to your own WorkLife.

How Asking What Makes You Happy Transforms Professional Decisions When Answers Conflict

Ivan is an architect who has spent twelve years designing affordable housing in Cork — work he genuinely believes in, solving real problems for real families rather than chasing prestige. He has a partner, a five-a-side team he hasn’t missed in years, a life built without ever needing to defend it.

Then an email arrives offering him everything he’s once said he wanted: a five-year social housing programme across Scandinavia, the scale and influence his own beliefs about architecture have always argued for. Seven days to decide.

He expects excitement. What he feels instead is a tightness in his chest he can’t explain.

What that feeling reveals is the heart of the lesson: everyone tells Ivan the same thing — figure out what makes you happy, and the decision will be clear. But when he asks himself the question, he gets two true answers instead of one. Copenhagen makes him happy. Cork makes him happy. Neither cancels the other out.

Which means the question that was supposed to simplify everything was never going to.

How Asking What Makes You Happy Transforms Professional Decisions When Answers Conflict follows Ivan through the seven days he has to choose — not between something good and something bad, but between two genuine, incompatible versions of good — and what he discovers about deciding honestly when there’s no answer that avoids loss.

In The Reading Room, the story sparks insight — you read, reflect, and let it shape how you see.

At The Writer’s Table, the written word clarifies thought and purpose, through a writing assignment that makes the lesson personal to your own experience.

The Workshop takes your thinking deeper, developing the insight into a systematic approach you can apply across your professional life.

And The Rehearsal Space is where you put it all into practice — embracing challenges and pushing boundaries.

By the end, the insight is no longer Ivan’s alone. It becomes a question you can ask of your own working life: when happiness points in two directions at once, which loss can you actually carry?
