A Story About Discovering That the Way You Naturally Work With Others Is Already the Way You Lead

Today, a new Story Lesson: How Vision Turns Your Motivated Abilities Into Authentic Leadership.
Each Story Lesson explores a real WorkLife moment where something important becomes visible — a conversation shifts, an assumption is challenged, or a different way of thinking begins to emerge. From that moment, the lesson unfolds into a structured learning experience that helps you understand what happened, why it mattered, and how to apply the insight to your own WorkLife.
How Vision Turns Your Motivated Abilities Into Authentic Leadership
Mel had just been promoted to director of operations — his first senior leadership role, earned through genuine operational talent. He could see how the parts of an organisation connected, solve problems others missed, and create clarity from chaos. But fresh from a leadership development programme full of models and frameworks, he sat in his new office and felt genuinely lost. Which style should he adopt? Which version of a leader was he supposed to become? Nothing in the training felt like him.
Then a weekend helping coordinate a community response to local flooding shows him something different.
He uses the same abilities he brings to work — seeing how resources connect, organising people, building systems under pressure. But there is no performance, no adopted persona, no wondering which approach to deploy. He simply does what comes naturally: helping people organise, enabling rather than directing. For six hours, he leads without once thinking about leadership — and people follow, not because he projects command, but because what he is doing plainly helps.
What that moment reveals is the heart of the lesson: authentic authority is not a style you adopt from outside. It’s the natural influence of your own abilities, doing what they were made to do — and what makes the difference is whether a vision you genuinely hold stands behind the work.
A leadership style adopted from a menu will always feel borrowed. Authentic authority emerges when the abilities that genuinely energise you are pointed at a clear vision of how you want to serve others.
How Vision Turns Your Motivated Abilities Into Authentic Leadership follows Mel as he learns to tell his natural authority from his performed authority, to recognise the specific pattern in how he genuinely leads, and to name the vision — leadership as building others’ capacity — that finally gives his abilities a direction to serve, where leading stops being a role he summons and becomes something that simply happens when he works.
In The Reading Room, the story sparks insight — you read, reflect, and let it shape how you see.
At The Writer’s Table, the written word clarifies thought and purpose, through a writing assignment that makes the lesson personal to your own experience.
The Workshop takes your thinking deeper, developing the insight into a systematic approach you can apply across your professional life.
And The Rehearsal Space is where you put it all into practice — embracing challenges and pushing boundaries.
By the end, the insight is no longer Mel’s alone. It becomes a question you can ask of your own working life: how do I already work with people when I’m not performing, and what vision do I want that to serve?
