This page explains the core language and methodology used across School of WorkLife. These terms are working concepts developed through long-term professional practice, writing, and story-based learning.

They provide a shared language and methodology for navigating WorkLife with clarity, depth, and integrity.

WorkLife

WorkLife is our life both in and out of the workplace, and the impact each has on the other. I believe WorkLife must be understood holistically, because all areas of our lives are so intrinsically linked they cannot be separated. I have connected the words Work and Life to express the meaning they hold for me, and I capitalise the first letter of each word to highlight their importance and relationship.

Story-Based Learning

Story-based learning is the foundation of the School of WorkLife methodology.

Stories are used as working material for reflection, understanding, and development. They surface real WorkLife situations, tensions, and decisions, allowing people to recognise their own experience within narrative form.

Stories are paired with structured reflection and guided work, creating a bridge between insight and action.

WorkLife Compass

The WorkLife Compass is a guiding metaphor used across programmes and resources.

It represents orientation rather than instruction — supporting people to navigate complexity, uncertainty, and change by developing internal reference points rather than external prescriptions.

The WorkLife Compass framework focuses on self-direction, self-coaching, and self-leadership as ongoing practices rather than fixed outcomes.

Self-Directing

Self-directing refers to the practice of making grounded choices about your path.

It involves recognising values, motivations, priorities, and personal truth, and learning how to choose direction in ways that are aligned, sustainable, and self-defined rather than externally imposed.

Self-Coaching

Self-coaching refers to the ability to support yourself through uncertainty, challenge, and change.

It includes reflection, self-questioning, emotional regulation, perspective-taking, and self-guidance — developing the capacity to work with your own experience rather than working against it.

Self-Leadership

Self-leadership refers to guiding your life and work with intention, integrity, and responsibility.

It is the capacity to lead yourself well across decisions, transitions, relationships, and responsibilities.

Guided Professional Programmes

WorkLife Compass Guided Professional Programmes are structured, self-directed digital programmes.

Each programme integrates story, reflection, and practical tools into a coherent learning experience designed for ongoing use and return across a working life.

Programmes are designed for repeated engagement, supporting different WorkLife situations, questions, and challenges as they arise.

Programme Collections

Programme Collections group related programmes into thematic learning pathways.

Collections reflect different dimensions of WorkLife development, including:

  • Self-Discovery
  • Book Club Books
  • The Art of WorkLife Storytelling
  • Enhance Your Character Traits
  • Good Mental Health and Wellbeing

Each collection supports long-term learning and development across a working life.

Learning as Practice

Within School of WorkLife, learning is understood as an ongoing practice that develops over time.

Learning is relational, reflective, experiential, and lived. It develops over time through attention, insight, application, and return.

This understanding shapes how all resources, programmes, and stories are created.

Language as Structure

The language and methodology used across School of WorkLife is designed to support clarity, coherence, and continuity.

Terms are used consistently to:

  • create shared understanding
  • support long-term learning
  • avoid hierarchy and exclusion
  • reflect lived experience
  • maintain conceptual integrity

Language is treated as structure and meaning.
