Lacey’s mind was already mulling over how she and the company could help each of them continue to learn, develop and grow personally and professionally in line with what was important to them both in and out of work.
The feedback from the group was that the experience of reading and discussing a fiction book had helped develop and fine-tune their empathy. This was because they believed having been able to tap into the feelings of the characters in the book, they felt this would help them be more attuned to their colleague’s feelings in everyday WorkLife situations and have greater empathy because of that.
Do You Believe in Love at First Page? February a Valentine’s Month Filled With Book Blind Dates was so successful it not only saved the library from closure, it also created permanent jobs for two new librarians to join Fred. That was just as well, because they continued to run monthly Blind Date with a Book themed events, which are so successful, they are continuously running out of covered books and need many hands to add more to the collection.
The social enterprise went much further than serving up the best coffees. Learning to create that perfect cup of coffee instilled a sense of pride in every single employee. And the parting words from Charlie as each team took their mobile coffee truck on the road, “I trust you, make the call,” gave them the self-belief that they could do this.
There is a need to ask different questions to get to new places. Questions to help people see themselves in a new light, to tell their story, to help them pivot.
Become a collector of stories. Other people’s and your own. This will help you find, develop and tell the right story at the right time in all WorkLife situations.
I believe so much in the power of effective feedback. I also believe there’s an effective and ineffective way of giving and receiving feedback. I’ve never liked the feedback ‘sandwich’, because the crux of what needs to be said and heard can be lost within what is said around it, the dressing that surrounds it. I believe feedback should be given context.
Aisling was already planning her next quarterly personal off-site, and until then she had her Joie De Vivre List of Places To Go, People To Be With, and Things To Do, to work (and play) through, to help her live her life to the full in the short-term, in the knowledge that these actions would help her, in time, to achieve her long-term dreams and aspirations.
Along the path of Aisling’s learning, she discovered the concept of mastering the art of time travel, specifically mental time travel. Through the powers of self-awareness and observation, recognising and acknowledging what was happening in the present – this is what led Aisling to begin her daily journaling practice. Fast forwarding to think about the future, rewinding to think about the past, and using counter-factual thinking to transport herself to an alternative timeline. All of this had given Aisling the capacity to find meaning in the mundane and happiness in the midst of sadness, and make time pass faster or slower at will.
